Mar 7, 2019

SQF training plays an important role in the implementation and ultimate success of an SQF System. In addition, The SQF Trainer plays a vital role in practitioners seeking food safety management knowledge. SQF Trainers have a unique perspective on how to optimize training sessions.

From the SQF Trainer point of view, there are some key considerations to bear in mind when going through the SQF training process.

Consider your learning style and schedule when selecting the right training format

Whether in the virtual classroom or in person, the content for SQF training is the same. It’s the format that differs: virtual training can be taken from your home or office, making it convenient for certain students. In-person and virtual classroom training includes peer-to-peer discussions, take-home materials, and interactions with trainers. For those that might do better with even more personal training, licensed SQF training centers offer private on-site classes for companies and teams.

Identify Leaders on Your Team and Commit to Ongoing Education and Continuous Improvement

Training and exams are available for experienced SQF practitioners to better hone their knowledge, keep up to date and help them communicate the effectiveness of the SQF program to senior management.

Take Advantage of Sector-specific Training

Reflecting the focused SQF Edition 9 structure, SQFI and SQF trainers offer sessions devoted to particular areas of business, such as manufacturing or packaging, as part of the process.

Arrive for Training Prepared to Learn

Like any classroom teacher or training instructor, SQF trainers appreciate it when their students come to class prepared to learn. Before starting a training session, identify your learning goals and take a moment to review the class schedule, agenda, any pre-course activities, and suggested resources. Taking a moment to review the SQF Code and highlighting clauses or elements where you need more information will help you get the most out of the class.

Review the Food Safety Vocabulary

In the SQF Code Appendix, there is a handy Glossary section that each student should take some time to review before their training class.

Involve Different Teams

Given the emphasis on having a strong top-down food safety culture, encourage participation in training across company functions. For example, in addition to food safety and quality professionals, other team members benefit from SQF training, including sanitation, warehouse staff, and senior site management.

Share the Availability of Bilingual Training

SQFI and registered SQF trainers offer virtual and in-person sessions in Spanish, to ensure access to the latest information.
