By Gigi Vita, Chief Food Safety Assessment Officer & Senior Vice President, SQFI

As we settle into 2025, the focus on food safety has never been more critical. SQF Edition 10 is on track for release in July  2025, with implementation for auditing set for the first half of 2026. With the upcoming launch of SQF Edition 10, The Safe Quality Food Institute (SQFI) is committed to fostering collaboration, transparency, and education to ensure the highest standards in the global food industry. Central to this effort are initiatives designed to engage stakeholders and provide robust educational resources. Here’s how SQFI is making this happen.

Engaging with Stakeholders: A Collaborative Approach Public Commenting System

One of the most exciting aspects of Edition 10’s development is the introduction of a new public commenting system. This innovative platform allows industry professionals, manufacturers, retailers, and other stakeholders to share their insights and provide valuable feedback. By inviting comments from diverse voices, SQFI ensures the updated code is comprehensive and practical. This inclusive approach reflects SQFI’s commitment to addressing real-world challenges and opportunities in food safety.

We encourage everyone involved in the food supply chain to participate in this process. Your feedback not only helps shape a code that meets industry needs but also strengthens the collective commitment to producing safer food worldwide. To set up your profile in the SQF public commenting system and learn more, including information about deadlines and submission guidelines, visit the public comments section of our website.

Collaborative Development

“The need for a new edition is identified based on factors such as changes in regulations, advancements in food safety science, and feedback from stakeholders,” says LeAnn Chuboff, Vice President of Technical Affairs at SQFI, as she highlights the meticulous process behind developing Edition 10.  “A decision is made to initiate the development of a new edition, and committees and working groups are formed, consisting of representatives from various sectors of the food industry, including producers, processors, retailers, and regulatory bodies. These groups may also include experts in food safety, quality management, and other related fields.”

The collaborative spirit driving Edition 10 extends beyond public feedback. Over 170 industry representatives have played a pivotal role in shaping this landmark update. These experts come from various food industry sectors, contributing their knowledge and experience to ensure that the code is relevant, forward-thinking, and adaptable to emerging trends.

This collaborative process underscores the strength of partnerships in achieving shared goals. By bringing together voices from across the industry, SQFI has created a robust foundation for Edition 10 that reflects the challenges and innovations shaping food safety today.

SQF Unites: Marching Towards Collaboration

In March 2025, SQF Unites will be a hallmark event celebrating collaboration and innovation. The annual gathering will provide a dynamic platform for industry professionals to connect, exchange ideas, and dive deeper into Edition 10's transformative aspects. Attendees can look forward to focused discussions, interactive panels, and dedicated sessions exploring the updated code's practical applications.

The event exemplifies SQFI’s commitment to fostering a collaborative environment, empowering participants to share their experiences and collectively raise the bar for food safety standards. SQF Unites will showcase the efforts behind Edition 10 and provide actionable insights and tools to help organizations successfully implement these new standards.

Educational Initiatives: Equipping the Industry for Successful Comprehensive Training Programs

With any major update comes the need for effective training and education. SQFI will make Edition 10 transition training available to the SQF community, which includes everything a site needs to prepare a team for the new Code changes. These resources will feature checklists, guidance documents, and consultation sessions to ensure implementation readiness. These resources provide practical insights and step-by-step instructions to help businesses implement the updated standards efficiently.

Whether you are a small supplier or a multinational corporation, SQF training programs are tailored to meet diverse needs. They aim to demystify the changes, making the transition to Edition 10 smooth and manageable.

Digital Seminars and Workshops

SQFI is organizing digital seminars and workshops throughout 2025 to complement these training materials. These events will delve into the implementation of Edition 10, offering a platform for discussion, learning, and collaboration. Industry experts and SQFI leaders will be on hand to address questions and provide guidance, ensuring participants leave with a clear understanding of how to align with the updated standards.

Edition 10 training and SQF interactive digital seminars with Q&A sessions offer networking opportunities, connecting professionals who share a commitment to excellence in food safety.

Looking Ahead

As we embrace the new year, SQFI’s focus on stakeholder engagement and education sets the stage for a transformative chapter in food safety history. You can be part of this exciting journey by participating in the public commenting system, contributing to collaborative development, and taking advantage of educational initiatives.

Let’s make 2025 a year of progress, partnership, and unparalleled commitment to food safety. Together, we can ensure that SQF Edition 10 sets the standard and redefines what’s possible in our industry. The SQF community stands strong, united by a shared commitment to excellence in food safety.
